A Pillow That Stays Cool All Night — Not Just the First Ten Minutes

Cooling gels, „cooling fabrics“, and phase-change layers all share the same physical limit: they work until they equalise with your body temperature, which usually takes ten to twenty minutes. After that, you are sleeping on a pillow that is the same temperature as you are. Horsehair works by a different mechanism — and it does not stop working at 3 a.m.

Why most „cooling pillows“ fail

Cooling gels and gel-infused foam draw heat away from your head into the gel, but the gel has a finite thermal capacity. Once it has absorbed as much heat as it can hold, it is just another piece of foam. The cooling effect is real for the first part of the night and gone for the rest.

„Cooling fabric“ covers feel cool to the touch in the store because the fibres conduct heat quickly away from your hand. As soon as the cover is in continuous contact with your head, it warms to body temperature and the effect ends.

Memory foam and polyurethane are net heat retainers. They insulate. A memory-foam pillow with a cooling-gel layer is the most common pillow sold in the US — and the most common pillow people give up on.

What horsehair does instead

Long horsetail hair has a property no synthetic material reproduces: the individual fibres are hollow. As your head warms the pillow surface, the hollow fibres transport warm, moist air away from your skin by capillary action — continuously, for as long as the pillow is in use. There is no thermal capacity to exhaust, no gel to saturate, no fabric finish that wears off.

The cooling effect is structural rather than chemical. It is also permanent: a horsehair pillow performs the same way in year fifteen as in year one.

About the manufacture

We ship horsehair pillows from the Moosburger manufacture in Vorarlberg, Austria — a traditional family workshop that has been processing horsehair since five generations. Rather than using chemicals, the raw hair undergoes a meticulous, purely natural refinement process using hot water and pressurized steam to ensure perfect hygiene and lasting volume. The cover is made of unbleached organic cotton, sewn in Austria.

Several of Europe’s most demanding luxury bed manufacturers source their horsehair filling from this exact same workshop. A quick independent search confirms which ones.
